Terengganu state sec offered early
retirement

By R.S.N. MURALI

KUALA TERENGGANU: State secretary Datuk Mokhtar Nong has been asked to take early

retirement and his replacement is expected to be named by January.

A source told The Star that the Menteri Besar’s office was in the midst of sifting through several names as his successor.

However, the name of the chosen candidate would only be announced after the Federal Government and the Terengganu palace have given their blessings.

Mokhtar, 54, who was appointed deputy state secretary after the Barisan Nasional wrested the state from PAS in 2004, was promoted the following year.

The source said among the candidates earmarked as possible successors were Datuk Mazlan Ngah, who is currently the state Financial Officer, and Terengganu Land and Mines Department director Datuk Abdul Razak Ismail.

However the possibility of a candidate from the Federal Government being parachuted in cannot be discounted.

The source added that the person’s age was a crucial factor in the selection.

The source said Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said plans to implement fast-track projects next year and wants the state secretary to keep pace with the swift execution of the proposed developments.

“The projects are not mega constructions but more people-centric developments aimed at uplifting the socio-economic status of the locals.

“The menteri besar also wants to ensure that future projects benefit the grassroots and every community in Terengganu, including the small Thai population in Besut,” said the source, hence the need for a state secretary who could cope with an increased work load and pressure.

Asked whether the sudden removal of Mokhtar was an attempt to eliminate key officials who served during the reign of previous Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, the source replied it had nothing to do with vengeance.

“If the current administration had disapproved of Mokhtar, he would have been removed a long time ago.”
